Guide · choosing
Which AI should you actually use?
There isn't one winner. As of 2026 there's a whole field of serious chatbots: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek and more. None of them is best at everything. The trick isn't finding “the smartest one.” It's matching the tool to the job. Pick what you're trying to do.
What do you want to do?
Best pick
ChatGPT
The one most people already use, by a wide margin, and it shows: polished, fast, and good at almost anything ordinary. A quick email, a summary, a plan, or just "what does this mean?"
Also worth a lookGemini is just as capable here, with the same kind of reach, and it's right inside Gmail and Docs.
Free or paid?ChatGPT's free tier covers most of this (it now shows ads in the US). Gemini's free tier is strong too. No card needed.
Snapshot · June 2026. We're not paid by any of these companies, and we use several of them ourselves, so we work to judge them on what they actually do, not who's biggest. The names and the order change fast; the way to choose doesn't.
You don't have to marry one. Most people who use AI a lot keep two open and reach for whichever fits the moment. Start free, and only pay once a tool has earned a spot in your week.
